It’s been four years since Martin Hasselgren aka Boy Omega released his latest album ”Night Vision” and finally the follow up (album #7) ”Full Moon Mantra” is here, an album featuring guest appearances from Christian Kjellvander, Kristofer Åström, Dino Spiluttini and Mire Kay.
So why the long wait? Martin tells the story.
“Well... A few years ago I decided to take a break from writing and producing music. This had to do with some personal issues and the fact that I felt a bit alienated from the whole industry surrounding music, cause to me my songs are just something I need to get out of my system so I can go on with everyday life. I’ve always felt a strong kinship with artists like Stina Nordenstam, Will Oldham or The Knife. Artists that let the songs do the talking and not the other way around. Anyway... In November 2014 while driving home after a fun tour in Germany, listening to Brian Eno’s “Apollo”, I once again got struck by creativity. Back home, inspired by the non stop curiosity and imagination of my son and daughter, I decided to change course and go back to the DIY-aestethics of my earlier albums, record a new album by myself in a relaxed and spontaneous way whenever inspiration struck and just trust my gut instincts. “Full Moon Mantra” is what came out and for what it’s worth I’m really proud of the result.”
The songs were written and tracked at home and away, in Martin’s apartment, a summer cabin in the woods of Småland and on the top floor of an old girl school building in Göteborg. Recorded using computer, analog tape, an old Fostex 4-track cassette player, a Nintendo DS and even the iPhone, it’s an album you don’t hear everyday. Songs and production with lots of unique and unexpected moments but still with a very cohesive album flow. You can hear traces of synth pop, chamber music, found sounds and ambient electronics mixed with more classical singer/songwriter elements and on top of everything a good chunk of imaginative sound worlds and playful production. Here and there artists like Tame Impala, Sufjan Stevens, Björk, Panda Bear or Xiu Xiu might come to mind but all in all this is Boy Omega’s very own universe.
