On September the 2nd, we celebrate the Music of a legendary producer:

James Yancey aka `J Dilla`´ aka Jay Dee (RIP)

This night will be a tribute to J Dilla and will focus mainly on the

Music of J Dilla but will also touch upon a wide range of different

hip hop and Soul producers who we feel were influenced by his sound

and style, as J Dilla himself was around since the ?Golden Era? of Hip

Hop. Therefore expect to hear some Classics as well post 2000 J Dilla

joints !

Jay Dee was a Hip Hop producer who emerged from the mid-1990s

underground hip hop scene in Detroit Michigan. According to his

obituary at NPR.org, he “was one of the music industry’s most

influential hip-hop artists, working for big-name acts like De La

Soul, Busta Rhymes, Common, Erykah Badu, The Roots and a Tribe called

Quest. Artists like Kanye West and the Neptunes and many others were

also heavily influenced by his production sound and style.

Yancey’s career began slowly; he was highly regarded among the groups

and rappers for which he produced, most notably for the production of

critically acclaimed albums by Common, Busta Rhymes, and The Pharcyde.

He was a member of Slum Village for their acclaimed debut album

Fantastic Vol 2. He was also a member of 2 production groups that were

collectively very influential for today´s post-Neosoul era: The

Soulaquarians and the Ummah which inlcude artist such as: Dángelo,

Bilal, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Questlove, James Poyser (`The

Miseducation´ Laurin Hill).

Following his death, the hip hop community became centered upon the

music and image of J Dilla. Many of the artists with whom Yancey

worked performed or recorded tributes, and a large group of followers

voiced their support for the late musician. Yancey’s music experienced

a rebirth as the producer gained many times more listeners than he had during his life.
